Call her mom, mum, ma, or mummy, we all share the experiences of having a mother, and many are also a mother. And the special day to celebrate all mothers is just a few days from now (May 8th) so here are a few things you might now know about Mother’s Day. 7 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT MOTHER’S DAY 1. ANCIENT GREEKS AND ROMANS CELEBRATED MOTHER'S DAY. Ancient myths hint that Greeks and Romans celebrated Mother's Day by honoring the goddess Cybele, the personification of Mother Earth the goddess of fertility, and Rhea, mother of the Gods. 2. MOTHER'S DAY WAS ORIGINALLY A DAY FOR WOMEN TO PROTEST AGAINST WAR. Social activist Julia Ward Howe first brought the idea of Mother's Day to the United States after the Civil War, but Howe's version was much different from the flowers-and-hugs version we know today. Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation and envisioned a Mother's Day for Peace, in which women would protest war. Some groups still observe the holiday in this manner; one of the most famous being a huge crowd of women who gathered outside the Lawrence Livermore Library at the University of California in 1982 to protest nuclear weapons. 3. MOTHER'S DAY IS ON A DIFFERENT DAY EACH YEAR. Mother's Day is always the second Sunday in May, which means it's on a different date each year. It will happen on Sunday, May 8 this year. 4. THE TOP ITEMS MOMS WANT FOR MOTHER'S DAY ARE PRETTY SIMPLE. According to a 2021 YouGov poll, mothers' top picks for Mother's Day gifts were a card, flowers, and/or a special experience with their family such as a spa treatment or a wine tasting experience. 5. LOTS OF FAMILIES GO OUT FOR MOTHER'S DAY. Mother's Day is a popular day to ditch the kitchen and eat out. In 2018, more than 87 million adults went to restaurants to eat, according to data from the National Restaurant Association. 6. THE TRADITIONAL MOTHER'S DAY GIFT IS A SINGLE CARNATION. Florists might hawk huge Mother's Day bouquets with exotic blooms and designer names, but the traditional gift is a single, simple carnation. So, why do moms love to get flowers so much? A study found that flowers affect human behavior, making people feel more compassionate toward others and happier in general when fresh-cut blooms are around. 7. IT'S A POPULAR DAY FOR PHONE CALLS. Do you call your mom regularly? It’s probably not a big surprise, but Mother’s Day is the most popular day for phone calls. Verizon reported seeing a 13% increase in voice calls on Mother’s Day in 2020 (compared to a typical Sunday.) To every mother, mum, mom, ma, or mummy... Happy Mother’s Day! |
