As a father of two, naturally I can’t help but wonder what lies ahead for my kids. I strive to remain focused on the present, enjoy each moment we spend together, and keep life playful and pure. I will admit it’s difficult, when work and life are simultaneously demanding. As JBW is blossoming, I have come to accept that the work and art that comes out of our endeavors holds a responsibility that reaches far beyond my own. Life turned upside down when I became a father. I have two kids, a 5 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. Sounds a bit cliche: I now know that feeling of no longer being the most important person in your life. It has given me the strength to be selfless, and to provide the emotional maturity I know my children need from me. The way I deal with the demands of work, and how I prioritize my time with family is paramount. At the same time, I try not to take it too seriously, otherwise I worry too much about it all. I have grown more and more comfortable with letting go. When I’m with them we play around, let loose, sometimes we enjoy wasting time together – and I don’t feel as guilty about it! I'm no longer traveling as much, and as the kids are growing, being home in Dallas is more and more a true luxury. On weekends, we are always with family, retreating to my sister's or parents home – enjoying each other’s company over tea as all the children play together. Despite the demands of work, I am trying to bring the balancing of time into every area of life. I limit the hours I work and the business trips I take away from family. When I am home, I focus on being present so that life becomes less of a juggle and more of a balance. Consumed by the intellectual challenges of leading a business, I love the time I get to escape it for a bit and spend it being around my kids. When I have a balanced day or week, there is something quite meditative in it for me, I feel more accomplished in regards to both my business and my loved ones. Time keeps passing—the business keeps evolving—my ideas plentiful—moments of laughter — and moments of challenges with my kids. I claim no expertise in fatherhood, or business, yet if I had to say one thing in conclusion, it would be to give yourself grace and do the best you can! | | FATHERHOOD: BALANCING TIME |
