Someone Thirsty? If you're not sure how much water your plant needs, or if it's getting enough moisture with each watering, try lifting it up after you've watered. Does it feel lighter than it looks? If so, a few different things could be happening: - The top few inches of soil are getting moisture, but the rest of the soil and roots below are still dry.
- The soil was so dry before watering that it became hard and full of cracks, allowing the water to run directly through it and out the drainage holes.
The solution? Try letting your plant sit in a couple inches of water so it can "soak up" moisture from the bottom up. After at least a few hours of soaking and up to one day, try lifting your plant again: you will see it is much heavier! That's because it's taken a big drink of water and its thirst is fully satiated. This is called bottom watering. You don't need to do this at every watering, but your plant will love you if you bottom water at least once per season. |
