Here's Katie with the hardware scoop.
(Future)

This week has been a reminder that there are people out there, in the words of ol' Three Dog, "fighting the good fight". I've been watching Twitter go up in smoke, opening a nice niche for Meta to launch Threads. In turn, Threads began muscling in on Mastodon's Fediverse, causing a bit of an uprising among Mastodon admins.

And while ChatGPT—and AI in general—is being used for some horrific things like deepfake porn voices, and sucking up your data for training, I can at least say someone's been using it to waste telemarketers' time.

The Big Story
We're on the brink of the biggest changes to computing's DNA and it's not just quantum that's coming
(Dan Whittaker)
I do think that we're scratching the surface there with quantum computing. And again, just like we broke the laws of physics with silicon over and over and over again, I think we break the laws of physics here, too," Marcus Kennedy, general manager of gaming at Intel, tells us.
Thinking big
Pretty big deals
Gigabyte G5 KF gaming laptop | RTX 4060 | Core i5 12500H | 15.6-inch | 1080p | 144Hz | 8GB | 512GB SSD | $899 (save $200 with coupon)
(Gigabyte)
The Gigabyte G5 is our favorite affordable gaming laptop around right now, packing the RTX 4060 GPU for some serious 1080p gaming performance in a budget package. It's a smart spec that essentially uses an otherwise older specification with the simple addition of just the new Nvidia RTX 40-series graphics chip. The 512GB SSD is a bit miserly, but that is upgradeable, but the 8GB of DDR4 memory is the tougher issue. Again, the memory is upgradeable, but it's still a bit frustrating--still, a great gaming laptop for the money.
ASRock RX 6600 GPU | 8GB | 1,792 shaders | 2,491MHz | $179.99 (save $20)
(Asrock)
The RX 6600 is a quality 1080p GPU now that its price creeps ever lower. At the sub-$200 point, we're getting a budget graphics card that delivers high frame rates in the latest games at top 1080p graphics presets. At least AMD and Intel are bringing GPU pricing down, eh?
Asus TUF Gaming monitor | 27-inch | 1440p | 170Hz | VA | $199.99 (save $70 with code)
(Asus)
Another day, another great 1440p gaming monitor going for ~$200. This Asus screen delivers all the necessary specs for a great gaming monitor and you really can't argue with that price.

Microsoft's light-based computer marks 'the unravelling of Moore's Law'
(Microsoft)
Presenting its findings as "Unlocking the future of computing" Microsoft is edging ever closer to photon computing technology with the Analog Iterative Machine (AIM). Right now, the light-based machine is being licensed for use in financial institutions, to help navigate the endlessly complex data flowing through them.

Thousands of 1980s PCs lived happily in a barn for 33 years and are now being sold for $120 a pop so you can relive the birth of PC gaming and the internet yourself
(James Pellegrini)
A Massachusetts man is selling no fewer than 2,200 new 1980s PCs. Each and every one is box fresh and powered by the very same Z80 processor as used in epoch-defining computers from the '80s, including the TRS-80 and Sinclair ZX80.

AMD's first hybrid CPUs heading for laptops later this year
(AMD)
It looks like AMD will soon be joining Intel in offering hybrid processor designs with more than one type of CPU core. According to Videocardz, images of a smaller variant of AMD's excellent Phoenix APU, as seen in laptops and also handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally, have emerged. The scuttlebutt is that this new "Phoenix 2" chip packs multiple CPU core designs.
