LEARN WITH SCG Steam Like a Pro Milk steaming can be a challenge, so how does your barista develop that perfect froth? Get started with these tips! Use Fresh Milk & a Cold Pitcher Make sure your milk is fresh and refrigerated, whether you’re using dairy milk or an alternative. You’ll also want a chill pitcher to ensure the steam does the heating.
Give Your Machine Time to Heat Make sure your machine is up to temperature before you turn on the steam. For a heat exchanger or dual boiler you should always have some steam ready, but a single boiler needs warmup time. Plunge the Wand & Turn on the Steam To avoid a mess, you’ll want to turn the steam with your steam tip under the surface of the milk. Then you’ll bring it to the surface to create your microfoam.
Make a Whirlpool Hold your pitcher at an angle with the tip just at the surface of the milk to create a swirling whirlpool. Lower the pitcher as you generate the foam to make more. Plunge the Wand Once you have enough foam, plunge the wand under the surface to heat the milk to temperature. Use a thermometer at first to understand how the pitcher should feel when fully heated.
Pour Carefully Latte art is a challenge! Start with a long pour to add the milk, then carefully layer the foam on top. Don’t worry if it takes some practice. Purge Your Steam Wand Be sure to purge and wipe down your steam wand with every use to avoid any milk buildup inside the wand.
