MOTHER'S DAY Q&A It's often the mother figure who shapes our earliest notions of who we are and what we believe to be true about ourselves and the world around us, at least for me that is. In honor of Mother's Day, I decided to ask my mom a few questions and since she actually wears The Line by K, I asked her to share the pieces she is currently loving and wearing. K: WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED MEMORY YOU HAVE WITH ME? M: I have thirty-three years of treasured memories with you. From watching you as a little girl "wash" dishes that weren't even dirty, 'Mommy & Me' classes and painting with you, to vacations with you as a grown woman in the Caribbean and coaching you through your labor pains. K: WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED FROM BEING A MOTHER? M: I went from being selfish to being selfless- it was no longer about me and my wants to a certain degree. I put my children's needs before my own, and the amazing thing is, I did not mind or give it a second thought. If you want a lush garden, you have to invest the time, love, and feed it "vitamins" to produce beautiful flowers. K: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BEING A MOTHER TO A YOUNG GIRL WHO IS DEVELOPING, GROWING, BEING INFLUENCED BY ALL OF HER EXPERIENCES VERSUS BEING A MOTHER TO A GROWN WOMAN WHO HAS COME INTO HER OWN, DEVELOPED HER OWN RITUALS AND BELIEFS, YET STILL NEEDS HER MOTHER BUT IN A VERY DIFFERENT WAY? M: In both seasons of life you are still her mother, however your roles are slightly different. With the young girl, you are what I would refer to as "the braces on her teeth." In other words, you are there to guide, advise, rescue and realign when she is veering from the path. You are more on the edge watching and making sure the "boiling pot" does not overflow and you are there to rescue emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. With a grown daughter, you are still her mother, but now you are also friends and maybe even more like sisters. Now you sit back and watch from a distance and trust that all of your advice, all of the lessons were absorbed and put into action. |
