Letter from the Editor: We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, and the holidays always created a lot of anxiety for my parents. They wanted to give me and my two siblings big Christmases filled with heaps of meticulously wrapped presents, but for many years, that just wasn’t possible. Looking back on that time now (especially as a mother myself), I can empathize with how hard it must have been for them. I’m sharing this now because my gift to you this year is a loving reminder that it doesn’t have to be this way. As adults, obligation can rob us of so much holiday magic, but the truth is there’s nothing stopping us from getting it back.
Take Miyako, M.M.’s Chief Creative Officer. She recently bought a house in upstate New York with her husband and 4-year-old daughter, Koh, and the change of scenery and lack of planning has created unexpected magic in the impromptu. “I am terrible at planning anything,” she shares in our profile of her ideal Friday night at home. “So for me, it’s always about coincidental encounters and finding something to celebrate, rather than celebrating something specific that I need to plan.”
There’s also magic in seeing ordinary things differently. Your favorite sweater can actually be worn in a variety of ways if you allow yourself to have fun with it.
Or you can create new traditions with friends, like attending a virtual wine tasting instead of hosting a giant Friendsgiving.
But if gifts are your love language or you’re just in a treat-yourself mood, that’s cool, too. Want to stick to a budget? Here’s a guide to getting the most out of our end-of-year sale, depending on how much you want to spend. So this Thanksgiving, while you’re thinking of all the things you’re grateful for, I challenge you to try to experience holiday magic, as well. And if it’s not easy to find, remember, it’s well within your power to create it. More soon, Caitlin Brand Editor
