How leaders can prepare for election-year tensions

There’s no doubt that 2024 already has the makings of a tough election year.

Politics can create big problems at the office, from arguments between workers to a nosedive in productivity—47% of respondents to a Gartner study conducted in early 2020 said the November 2020 election had impacted their ability to get work done. With the general election just a few months away, I spoke with more than a dozen executives and workplace experts on how employers can prepare themselves for a contentious election.

Though each employer will have its own unique considerations, including legal risks, relationships with workers, and the company's history of handling politics in the office, the experts shared advice that applies to nearly all companies. The most important tip? Don’t wait until election season is in full swing to figure out a game plan.
