Dead or Alive? Have a tree that's not doing too hot? It might look like it's dead or on the verge of dying, but there's one easy way to know: performing a scratch test. A scratch test is a simple way to see if a plant is still alive (despite, for example, losing all its leaves). As the name implies, you simply scratch a branch or trunk with your nail or a blade. If you see green or white flesh below the bark, your plant is still alive. Plants that are prone to leaf drop such as the Rubber Tree, Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree or Black Olive Tree may suddenly lose many or even all of their leaves, only to surprise you soon after with plenty of new growth. Before giving up, try the scratch test and if you get the "green" light, be patient as your plant bounces back from whatever it is that initially stressed them out. We promise-- you will find nature's resilience truly inspiring! |
