Letter from the Editor: I took my own advice and tried to create a new holiday tradition this year. I decided that the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, we’d get dressed up and go out for French food as an homage to the magical Thanksgiving my husband and I spent in Paris in 2017. I romanticized the evening all week:
I’d wear the Dae top tucked into the Harlem skirt
(two of my favorite picks from my holiday bundle)
and straighten my hair to show off the Briar earrings
(I’ve been working on evolving my personal style ahead of the new year, and these 6 tricks have really helped). My daughter would wear an adorable new sweater dress and black tights, and my husband would don his most Stanley Tucci-esque ensemble. We’d head to a local brasserie, where we’d all cozy up in a booth and order cheese, steak frites, mussels, and champagne and take pictures, giggle, and create some memories.
But then I remembered we had to get rapid Covid tests before seeing our extended family on Thanksgiving day. The only clinic with available appointments was slammed, so we ended up having to push our dinner reservation back 15 minutes, then 30, then a whole hour. Ultimately, the whole evening was a TED Talk in expectations vs. reality, but we were dressed up, eating french fries, and making memories, so I’m still going to count it as a win.
While we’ll probably try again next year (maybe in Paris?!), it was also a reminder of why I generally prefer entertaining at home. Sure, I don’t have a Nancy Meyers-approved kitchen (though I know exactly how to dress like my favorite Nancy Meyers character), but I find a lot of joy in hosting guests and turning our typically sleepy apartment into a full-on party.
In fact, I fancy myself a bit of an expert in this department. Here’s how I put together a magical, imperfect, and super-fun night in—no reservation necessary. More soon, Caitlin, Brand Editor

What We’re Reading Right Now: Kazuo Ishiguro’s newest work, Klara and the Sun. Narrated by an artificial intelligence bot named Klara, the book explores what it means to be human from the outside in with all of Ishiguro’s characteristic thoughtfulness and eeriness.
What We’re Reading Right Now: Or if you want something with no robots involved, Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier’s 1930s mystery, which hooks you into a ghostly story that demands to be finished as quickly as possible.
What We’re Reading Right Now: And if you want to go even further back in time, Matrix by Lauren Groff. This story, highlighting a twelfth century nun consolidating power at a lonely abbey, is gloriously written and imbued with equal parts myth and poetry.
