Letter from the Team I might be alone in this, but to me, the most inspiring career stories aren’t the ones starring interns who rise through the ranks of their corporations and become CEOs; or the ones where promising college dropouts found billion-dollar startups. Don’t get me wrong: That’s great work if you can get it—but the career stories that lend themselves to snappy 30-second elevator pitches aren’t what get me excited about forging my path. (Also, those trajectories are unattainable for most people.)

The career stories I find more interesting and instructive are the ones that are harder to tell: the stories that don’t fit a linear narrative path, that take unexpected left turns, that meander at times, and that leave room for new destinations yet to come. I like the stories that hold space for possibility. That’s why I’m so excited about this new piece by Emily Tisch Sussman, host of the podcast She Pivots. When it comes to our careers, it can be easy to fall into a sunk-cost mindset, but Emily’s interviews (with extremely accomplished women, like Vice President Kamala Harris) serve as reminders that it’s okay to change your mind. The person we decided to be in our 20s doesn’t have to be the person we become in our 30s. The career we honed in our 40s doesn’t have to dictate what we do in our 50s.

One woman who understands this deeply is Tashira Halyard, the style expert behind our newest capsule of the month.

Today, Tashira works as a content creator and consultant, but she’s also held careers in education, law, and public policy. In our interview, she told me about her fascinating career journey, how she’s embracing the “soft life,” and why she sees self-expression as an act of resistance.
