Introduced in 2012, Harley-Davidson’s Breakout is a stretched and low custom-style cruiser with tons of attitude. A wide 18-inch rear tire and skinny 21-inch front tire matched to a raked-out front end screams “Let’s run ‘em” at every stop light. As the years rolled on, the low-slung softail got subtle tweaks to keep pace with the changing styling trends.

Powerplants changed as well through the years, beginning with a 103 cubic-inch Twin Cam in 2012 and growing to a 114ci Milwaukee-Eight before it was pulled from Harley’s lineup after the 2020 model year.

For 2023, the Breakout returns with the biggest production M8 engine to date with a booming 117 cubic inches. There’s plenty of chrome and machined wheels, once again calling out all comers from the first flicker of a green light.

Cycle World’s editor-at-large Blake Conner took a Baja Orange 2023 Breakout 117 for a rip around Southern California in a multi-day test. He found that it not only owns the main drag but it also can hold its own on curving mountain roads. You can read his full report here

And what about other custom-style cruisers? I’ve included some tests of others from our archives. Take a look and leave some comments.
