(Gameloft)
I was recently told by other members of the PC Gamer team that I do a great job at making my video game characters look like myself. I wish I could say it's because I spend hours in character creation menus carefully adjusting every single slider and setting, but honestly it's just because I look like an egg with glasses and a beard. It takes me about a minute to recreate myself. Glasses: On. Hair: Off. Beard: Yes. Done.

It did make me wonder why I replicate my own looks in games so often. I can be anyone in a game. I can have hair in a game. So why don't I? In The Sims 4, Disney Dreamlight Valley, even in Fallout 76 I made my character look like myself. I haven't played Hogwarts Legacy, but I bet I'd try it there, too. Hey, Sorting Hat, do you allow bald kids with beards in your magic school?

Did I get tired of escapism at some point, or do I just find being me more immersive than becoming a complete stranger? Maybe it's a way to feel less like I'm just sitting at a keyboard and more like I'm in the game world. Being yourself, but somewhere else... I think that's escapism, too.

WoW player hits level cap before even arriving at the starting area
(Blizzard)
It's official: Reaching World of Warcraft's level cap of 70 without leaving its tutorial zone is now old-hat. Instead, real dedicated zen masters hit maximum strength without ever leaving the confines of the boat that takes you to the game's starting area.

Returnal review: A roguelike shooter at war with its own identity

The more you play, the more it feels like a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's a game with one foot in the studio's past and another in its future, and despite the game's strengths that's not always a comfortable position to stand in.

Hogwarts Legacy players discover a hugely OP secret weapon: cabbage
(Warner Bros.)
Hogwarts Legacy is a game about going to school to learn to cast magical spells so you can commit horrific acts of violence at a rate not often seen in tween-oriented tales. But if you really want to kick butt, you might want to forgo magic in favor of something a little more vegan.
