Memory Decline Forced This Runner Onto a Treadmill. Now, at 62, He’s Sprinting Faster Than Ever

It’s Saturday morning, and John Lambert stands over his treadmill, legs spread wide, hands gripping the rails. He’s in his early 60s, clad in black shorts and a T-shirt emblazoned with an inspirational slogan, “Show Some Love.” While the belt whirs loudly, almost angrily, beneath him, he dips his head, grimaces, takes a deep breath, and hops on.

A few seconds and four strides later, he hops back off, turns wide-eyed to his wife Carla, and grins: he’s set a new personal speed record.

For most of the last decade, Lambert’s running has been confined to the treadmill. Ever since his diagnosis, safety has demanded indoor exercise. Rather than experiencing this restriction as a limitation, though, he’s found an opportunity to set and achieve personal goals—most recently, a speed record that’s a tad over 17 miles per hour.
