Letter from the Team: The first time I interviewed for a job, the thing I was most stressed about wasn’t my (very sparse) resume or how I would respond to the infamous question, What’s your biggest weakness? What caused me more worry than anything else was my outfit. That might sound superficial, but the reality is that what you wear to an interview matters—and I knew my wardrobe of workout leggings, going-out tops, and sweatshirts wasn’t going to cut it. Lucky for me, I had a more sartorially advanced best friend who happened to be my size, and she let me borrow a pair of black slacks, a white button-down blouse, and some sensible heels that were only one size too small for me. (I was fine with this, because at that point in my life, I kind of thought work shoes were supposed to be uncomfortable. How wrong I was.) It wasn’t perfect, but this outfit gave me the confidence to get on a train to New York City for the interview. And guess what? I got the job.

I was fortunate to have the help of my friend (and, if it had come to this, the funds to buy a new outfit), but many women don’t have this privilege. That’s why organizations like Bottomless Closet are so important. Bottomless Closet, one of M.M.’s longtime partners, is a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged NYC women enter and succeed in the workforce by providing them with professional clothing as well as resume and interview guidance. I had a chance to sit down with their Executive Director, Melissa Norden, to discuss just how much of a difference the right interview outfit can make. One thing she said has really stuck with me: It’s not about the clothes. It's about how the clothes make you feel.

Sometimes, it’s an invisible detail that gives a piece of clothing the power to inspire confidence. Maybe it’s a little snap in your dress straps that holds your bra in place, eliminating worry of a wardrobe malfunction. Or perhaps it’s a tailored work dress that’s secretly super stretchy and keeps you comfortable through lunchtime and beyond.
