While running alone at 3 a.m. through California’s Marin Headlands, ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes claimed he had a chilling confrontation with a coyote.

With blood on his face and shirt, Karnazes, 59, took to Instagram over the weekend to detail his experience.

“I just had something rather terrifying happen,” said Karnazes, who was completing the 150-mile Marin Headlands Endurance Run. “I got attacked by a coyote. That was a first.”
