| Happy Sunday, runners! This past weekend I did something I haven’t done since 2018: I raced. I’ve been a runner since middle school, racing every distance from the 800 meters to the marathon, but I’d gotten it into my head that races were meaningless if I didn’t set a PR, which sucked all the joy out of racing. Last weekend’s fun 5K reminded me that running is as much about going fast as it is about simply enjoying the company of people who also love to spend their Saturdays sweating at the crack of dawn, comparing Garmin watch tans, and debating the ideal ripeness of a postrun banana. All this is to say, I’m looking for races that focus more on fun. For example, I came across a race in South Carolina called “Revenge of the Stede Bonnet.” It’s an extremely challenging trail ultra named for a plundering sea pirate—complete with Jolly Roger flags to mark steep vertical climbs, gold doubloons instead of finisher medals, and a strict requirement that all racers choose their own pirate names. (Runners will have their new pirate identities printed on their bibs, and will be referred to by such names for the duration of the event.) That’s just one of the dozens of interesting options out there. If you’re also hunting for a race that strays from the norm, start by checking out our list of unconventional marathons below. |

Grabbing a set of weights for a quick strength workout can support your miles in an abundance of ways, and you don’t need to dedicate a lot of time to it. You just need the right dumbbell workout for beginners to get started… → Keep reading 👄 Pretty much everyone has had the experience of waking up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth. But some people have that experience all the time. A persistent dry mouth is not only uncomfortable but can also be a sign of other health issues. Left untreated, chronic dry mouth—at night or during the day—can lead such issues as tooth decay, gum disease, or oral thrush, according to the Mayo Clinic... → Keep reading |

👟 If you’re a runner who has ever seen a podiatrist or sports medicine doctor, gone to physical therapy, or even just shopped for running shoes, chances are you’ve heard the term pronation. Pronation is the inward movement of the foot as it rolls to optimally distribute the force of impact on the ground as you run. But what does this mean and how does it affect you as a runner?… → Keep reading 📽 There’s a moment in The Woman King movie that, no spoilers, is one of the best running scenes this film-lover and running enthusiast has ever seen on screen. It involves the titular character and protagonist, Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis, dressed in the attire of the warrior army she leads. She sets off defiantly, on foot with machete in hand. As she takes her first few steps, bold and unwavering, we see not far behind her, the other Agojie women running in single file after her. It’s a rousing action that captures the heart and soul of the mighty Hollywood epic—and the running looks masterful… → Keep reading 🍑 Nearly 8 in 10 Americans don’t consume the recommended two cups of fruit per day, according to the latest U.S. Dietary Guidelines. And the fruit servings we are consuming often lean heavily toward bananas, apples, oranges, and grapes. There’s a lot of nutrition and flavor hiding out in one less-common yet easy-to-love family of fruits, though—and that is, stone fruits… → Keep reading |
