Letter from the Team: Between reaching the depths of February and experiencing a particularly rough week of current events, I’ve been thinking a lot about safety and security. Sometimes, it’s enough for safety to come in the form of comfort—a kind word from a friend, a luscious knit, or a warm hug. But other times, it needs to be built into our systems and organizations and protect people from the top down.

That’s part of why I’m so excited about this new essay by Minda Harts on how managers can create a more equitable workplace, particularly for women of color. “When a woman of color doesn’t have a manager who is supporting and advocating for her,” she explains, “then the manager is denying the employee the opportunity to perform at her highest level and showcase her best work.” People who manage teams have the power to create an environment where all employees feel comfortable and are therefore able to thrive—a privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
