As of writing this, I’ve read 34 books this year, which means I’m six books shy of my 40-book goal for 2022. To hit my goal, I’ll have to finish a new book every four days for the rest of the year. With the help from some strategic (aka short) selections, I’m pretty confident I can do it. But should I? In 2021, my goal was 35 books. It was down to the wire, but I ended up hitting my target by spending the entire afternoon of December 31st powering through Kristin Hannah’s The Four Winds, stopping only for bathroom breaks. I enjoyed the book, sure, but the experience felt less like a cozy, winter-break leisure activity and more like speed-writing a college paper hours before class. When I finally finished and logged my triumph in Goodreads, I was rewarded with a small cartoon trophy. So…I guess…it was worth it?

Whether I’m tallying my annual book count, “closing my rings” on my Apple watch, or getting virtual high-fives from a green owl for learning a new phrase in Korean, it often feels like activities that used to be about discovery and enjoyment now center around points and “streaks.” The question I’ve been pondering: When everything is gamified, does anybody really win? In one of her recent blog posts, Anne Helen Petersen shares her own experience of losing the joy in reading and how she’s getting it back. In 2023, I plan to

follow suit, aiming not to up my book count, but to rediscover the transportive experience of immersing myself in another world. And if I can achieve that, it’ll be the best holiday gift I could possibly receive.

I’ve noticed that finding a pleasure-reading “flow state” is a lot easier when I’m extremely physically comfortable. Tucking myself into the coziest corner of the couch with the pillows arranged just so, lighting my favorite candle, wearing something soft—it all makes a difference. So of course, I’ll be wearing my plush cashmere Theo pullover—which is by far my favorite purchase from the end-of-year sale—constantly.
