BMW’s R 18 cruiser might just be the most polarizing model the brand has ever put forth. It’s a German take on American cruising, and it hits the mark in multiple facets. Even so, going head-to-head with America’s cruising giants of Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle, BMW has its work cut out for it. Could you imagine The Motor Company trying to compete with an S 1000 RR superbike? Well, again—lest we forget H-D’s ownership of Buell

When we first rode the R 18 in 2020, we were impressed by the R 18’s fit and finish, massive 1,803cc (or 110ci) boxer engine, and overall styling. There were some misses, mainly the engine vibration and less than comfortable seat. Subsequent models such as the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental increased the comfort and added niceties such as infotainment, wind protection, and baggage. But still, the R 18 was just a step behind the Americans.

Now, the R 18 Roctane seems to have gotten the hot-rod bagger formula nearly right. There’s still some vibes, but our UK-based contributor, Adam Child, thoroughly enjoyed his time on the Roctane. Check out his full review here, and peruse some of our other tests of R 18 variants. It’s a wonderful cruiser that is almost right; and for those looking for a contrarian cruiser, it could be right on.

As always, there’s more than we can fit into this email. Check out cycleworld.com for additional tests, reviews, and news.
