Post-graduation, I landed at a startup that had just achieved unicorn status, but I felt like anything but a unicorn myself. In my memory, this time was marked with confusion about my career and wrinkly polyester skirts, bought in a frenzy after the scratchy pants I had tried on in a fast-fashion dressing room nearly brought me to tears. Four and a half years ago, I joined the M.M. team, where, in my first role as Executive Assistant, I was suddenly surrounded by the smartest women I had ever met. This marked a new phase, where my true career and personal ambitions began to take shape. It was also the moment I met the first pair of pants I really liked—no, loved—M.M.’s Foster pants.

Early on, I remember trying on a pair of black Fosters with a stylist in our NYC store and looking in the mirror with a recognition that I had not felt before. A huge smile broke across my face—I felt comfortable, my butt looked great, and beyond that, I felt a powerful joy.

Over the years, I have amassed a collection of Foster pants in many colors (and in case you have, too, we just updated our guide to styling the Fosters in every shade). But more importantly, I’ve also found more joy than ever before in the woman I have become personally and professionally. Perhaps this transition is not all because of M.M.’s pants, but they’ve certainly supported my journey.

This Women’s History Month, we’ve chosen to celebrate both the pants we make and the women who wear them.

Pants have long been a sartorial symbol of empowerment for women, and we have a special guest essay from Elle’s fashion features director Véronique Hyland tracing that history (did you know that the first time a woman wore pants on the House floor was in 1969?!).
