Letter from the Team: As the days get longer, the birds and frogs noisier, and the landscape greener, one of the main things running through my mind is change. I’m M.M.LaFleur’s Director of People, so change-management is a major aspect of my role—whether that change is expected, like recruiting and career development, or unexpected, like, oh, I don’t know, a 2+-year global pandemic.

Covid-19 rocked foundations the world over, especially in the workplace. I’ve spent much of the last few years re-assessing business practices, from adjusting our culture to support remote work to developing health and safety policies for our in-person teams. And if you zoom in more closely (Zoom, ha, pandemic humor), you’ll see that these shake-ups have also affected individuals’ assessments of what they want out of their careers and lives.

While I didn’t change careers—I’m approaching 8 years at M.M.!—I did change my location. I now live in the woods of New England, embracing a combination of digitally remote urban life and slower, greener rural reality. But for others, the chance to reassess priorities has led to career shifts, reversals, and outright transformations. My advice as an HR professional: If you’re considering a career change, focus on identifying the bridges between your current and desired responsibilities and homing in on the unique perspective you bring to the position.

Even if you’re content where you are, you might explore some changes to how you approach your day to day. Perhaps a springtime closet cleanout is in order, especially if your office dress code has shifted. Or maybe you’re simply no longer willing to wear suits—which is fine, because there’s so much more to “business formal” than suits. And I hope you’ve developed a renewed appreciation for your PTO and are using your time away to the fullest (that means no checking your email from the pool deck!). Now that we’ve found safer ways to gather, mute your Slack app and really enjoy your friend’s wedding (and in case you’re stressing about what to wear, we created a guide to dressing for eight types of summer weddings).

It would be irresponsible to pretend that all, or even most, of the changes we’ve experienced these last few years have been positive ones. We’ve lost neighbors and loved ones, witnessed conflict and division, and spent probably more time than is healthy inside and on screens. Part of change management is acknowledging and sitting with the painful parts, while finding a way to live with them and continue to be.
