Letter from the Team: I had my first son in 2020, and as I approach my third “official” Mother’s Day, I can’t help but reflect on the first two and how much has changed now that I’m fully in the throes of motherhood. Expectations for my first Mother’s Day, in 2020, were appropriately dampened by Covid, but my new family of three made the best of it by spending a quiet day outside, sipping champagne, enjoying the sunshine, and people-watching in Riverside Park.

But Mother’s Day isn’t always sunshine and champagne; whether you're dealing with infertility, estranged from a parent, or mourning the loss of a mother or mother-figure, the day can be wrought with emotion. Last year, I was reminded that Mother’s Day can be a difficult holiday when spending the day with my mom in New York City, where we honored her mother, my grandmother, who had passed away a few months earlier.

We reminisced on her life, hung some of her artwork in my apartment, and reflected on some of the lessons we each learned from her.

(For instance, don’t shy away from asking for exactly what you want—ahem, “Katie, dear, I’d really love a new cashmere wrap from M.M…”)

After adding a second baby to our family last fall, I’ve taken that advice to heart. This year, rather than drop hints about potential Mother’s Day gifts, I plan to take matters into my own hands and buy myself a few of the new machine-washable jewel-tone dresses launching later this week. From weddings to family reunions, my crew will be back out in the world this summer, and most of my non-work mental energy will be devoted to debating how much is too much to spend on suits for my two-year-old and six-month-old (I’m thinking I can increase the budget for the toddler suit since the baby may wear it in the future?). Luckily, I snagged the Jillian and Fatima dresses, so I’ll look as polished and put-together as my dapper sons.

While for some people, Mother’s Day means family brunches, flowers, and gifts, others have less joyful associations with the holiday. Especially in light of the challenges to women’s healthcare this week, I’m reminded of the importance of supporting mothers who don’t have access to the everyday necessities required to care for a new child. That’s why M.M. is excited to partner with Welcome Baby, a non-profit that provides low-income mothers with one package containing all of the items they’ll need for their newborn in the first four weeks of life.
