Letter from the Team: It was the summer after I graduated college, and I had a job lined up at my dream company: an exciting women-run startup called M.M.LaFleur (heard of it?). I had plans to move to New York City—something I’d dreamt of for years—in just a few months. My whole future ahead of me. So why was I standing in a mall dressing room in New Jersey almost in tears? One likely answer: I’d spent the past four years wearing mostly leggings, sweatshirts, and tank tops, and all of a sudden, I was tasked with figuring out what “business casual” meant—and how to get an entire work wardrobe on a limited budget.

On an emotional level, I equate the experience of shopping for your first job to that of shopping for your first bra. It’s exciting but uncomfortable; incredibly vulnerable; and kind of an out-of-body experience. Luckily, after a few weeks on the job, I ended up with some M.M. pieces that were office-appropriate and still made me feel like me. Six years later, I’m proud to say I’ve got this dressing-for-work thing down to a science. So for those of you who are starting a new job—and maybe even your first job ever—I’m sharing five of the most important lessons I’ve picked up. Here’s what to wear when you’re starting a new role.
