Letter from Our Featured Contributor :The beauty of being self-employed is that I am the boss. I nap when I want to. The dress code is my domain, and I decide how much makeup is too much. And, lately, no amount of makeup is too much. Whether I’m meeting with a potential client, chatting with publicists, or sitting outside at a coffee shop to work, I’ve found myself returning to the comforting steps of primer, foundation, blush eyeliner, mascara, and brow gel. That’s partly because I look significantly better with makeup—I’ve chosen to accept this—but also because it’s nice to try again after two-plus years of looking like I climbed out of a pit. The confidence boost doesn’t hurt, either.

I’m not alone in this eagerness to go full speed ahead with makeup, as I learned when researching my story about how women are approaching makeup as they return to the office. Some women are jazzed to wear makeup as they head back to their desks, even in hybrid format, and those who aren’t into makeup still have found comfort in newfound skincare routines. (Sunscreen—we love to see it!) Either way, the evolution is inspiring. “The pandemic taught me to stop wishing about the woman I wanted to be and just start being her,” said one person we interviewed. “I now show up as the woman I am and want to be daily—no more wishing, only doing.”
