Letter from the team: I’m not into sports, but every four years, I tune into the Olympics. I love watching the powerful gymnasts, the elegant figure skaters, and the acrobatic divers, but my favorite part is the moment before an athlete begins their performance, race, or routine. I mean, how often do you get to observe a person in the seconds before they achieve the dream they’ve been working toward for their entire life? Look at their faces, and you’ll see a level of focus that rarely (if ever) shows up in our modern, distraction-filled lives.

You might not be an Olympian (and if you are…want to be featured on The M Dash?), but we can all learn something about gearing up for important events from people whose jobs entail extremely high-pressure moments. So this week, we spoke with four women whose careers revolve around such moments, from performing at Coachella to playing professional pickleball. They shared how they mentally prepare for their biggest shows, games, and shoots.

Of course, for some of us, a significant career moment might look very different. Perhaps instead of lacing up your pointe shoes, you prepare by pulling on your favorite suit.
