Letter from the Team: Last weekend, after consuming an ambitious order at our favorite Korean barbecue spot, four of my friends and I wandered over to a nearby dive bar. All was well when we walked in: Vintage signs hung everywhere, tattooed bartenders ran the place, and the bathroom walls provided a unique form of entertainment as you washed your hands—thanks to Sharpie-written graffiti that I cannot repeat here. I love these local-watering-hole type places, but after grabbing our drinks and claiming the one empty table, things got a little more complicated for me. Upon sitting down, I realized this bar had games—which charms me in theory but induces dread in practice. I don’t know about you, but I detest learning a new game. Listening to someone read out instructions I’m not going to understand until I actually play—and fail at—the game for a few rounds is just not my idea of fun. So when my friend noticed the game-filled shelf next to us, I crossed my fingers and hoped we could all agree on something juvenile, like Jenga or Apples to Apples.

Don’t get me wrong: I wish I had the patience to learn bridge on a random Saturday night or the ability to lead my family in a game of poker over the holidays. In fact, I’m actually going to make the latter a real goal of mine this fall—inspired by our partnership with Poker Power, a company empowering women to harness the strategic thinking of poker in their careers and lives.

In advance of our upcoming Poker Power workshop in Chicago, we spoke with their president, Erin Lydon, about how playing poker can help women succeed in the workplace. “Poker is a game of both logic and psychology, and what makes a really good poker player is reasoning combined with emotional intelligence,” she says. “It translates to how you go about asking for a promotion; to having the courage to negotiate your pay; and even to negotiating with your partner about whose turn it is to take the trash out.'' Consider me intrigued.

I encourage you to branch out and learn something new, too, but at the same time, don’t forget to embrace the things that are already working in your life. This includes clothing items that bring you comfort and make you feel your best on a regular basis.
