Time and progress—and emission mandates—march on, but in the cruiser category change is not always so quick. Still, from time to time there’s a shift in a segment that seems to happen all at once, relatively speaking. Indian brought the liquid-cooled, multipiece aluminum-framed Scout to market as a 2015 model, and the clock began ticking for the Evo-powered Harley-Davidson Sportster. In 2022, H-D brought the Sporty’s replacement to the market in the form of the Nightster: Also liquid-cooled, but with a sporting take than the Scout’s more traditional look.

Then here comes Honda, with its vision of a cruiser in the 2022 Rebel 1100, ignoring the traditional V-twin powerplant and using a parallel twin taken from the Africa Twin adventure bike. There’s even an automatic DCT option! These three machines show there’s more than one way to approach stripped-down, straightforward cruising.

We decided to find out which manufacturer has the best formula, comparing the 2022 Harley-Davidson Nightster, Honda Rebel 1100 DCT, and Indian Scout Rogue on a multiday ride. Senior Editor Morgan Gales breaks down every aspect of these three models, covering performance, handling, comfort, and fit and finish to arrive at a surprising conclusion and winner.
