In 2006 Triumph ceased production of its liter-class sportbike, the Daytona 955i, leaving its fans in the lurch when shopping for a superbike. Now here comes the closest thing in 16 years to scratch that Triumph superbike itch: the Speed Triple 1200 RR. “But wait!” you say. “A Speed Triple is a streetfighter.” You’re not wrong, but this RR model comes with a small fairing, upgraded electronic suspension, and clip-on bars. It’s not meant for lap time supremacy, but it does increase the sporting potential of the already spectacular Speed Triple 1200.
Contributing editor and former superbike pro Doug Toland took the Speed Triple 1200 RR for extensive testing and came back impressed. Not only for the increased performance, but also for the easy-to-live-with character. While ergonomics are more compact than the streetfighter it’s based on, the RR is more comfortable than a full-on superbike. If you’re not going to the track, why suffer for a track-optimized rider triangle? Check out his full review here to get his thorough assessment of this middle-ground, large-displacement sportbike.
